His Lord said unto him, well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over A few things, I will make thee ruler over many things, enter thou into the joy of thy Lord. Matthew 25:23
On October 13, 1923, in Prentiss, Mississippi, a daughter was born to the union of Carlie and Amanda Newsom and was given the name of Essie Mae Newsom.
Essie along with her parents and siblings moved to St. Louis, Missouri on January 1, 1938. She was the third of eight children and the oldest daughter. Essie accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at a very young age. On Mother's Day, 1940, she and her mother joined the Newstead Avenue Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Harris. Here is where she remained a faithful and dedicated member for over 69 years. Essie loved to sing and was Secretary of the Ladies Chorus for 20 years. She continued to serve the Lord by working in the Women's Missionary Union.
Essie was educated in the St. Louis Public School System. Her journal notes states "In 1940, I attended Washington Technical High School and was on my way to class when I saw Anderson in the hall. He smiled and I did the same". That was the beginning of the sweetheart relationship and on February 10, 1942, Essie was blessed in the union of marriage to Anderson William Walton, her devoted husband of 63 years. To this union, six children were born.
Essie lived her life for her husband and family. She earned a Master's Degree in being a housewife and homemaker. She earned a Bachelor's Degree on rearing and nurturing her children, grandchildren, and neighbors' children. There was always room in her home because there was always room in her heart. She earned a Ph.D. for her cooking, baking, and sewing. Essie will always be remembered for her sweet and gentle ways and for never letting an opportunity pass, when asked, to give her advice on most subjects of life. She was quite opinionated.
Essie entered into the presence of the Lord in the early morning hours on Tuesday, October 28th in her home and under the loving care of her children. Her husband, Baby Daughter, Victoria, parents, three brothers and two grandchildren all preceded her in death. To cherish her memory, she leaves: two sons, Michael Walton and Donald Walton (Lavonne); three daughters, Diana Edwards (George), Arlene Brown (Matthew), and Gloria Gordon (James); grandchildren, Tracey, Caprice, Kimberley, Dwan, Michael, Tara, Ryan, Troy, and Tamika; eight great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; her brother, Worthy Newsom (Elaine); and three sisters, Elma Walker, Thelma Cahill and Viola Newsom; Essie will be missed by a host of relatives and friends to whom she was dear.
