On Wednesday Morning, October 14, 2009, God dispatched His "Special Angel" to Christian Hospital of St. Louis, Missouri. With wind beneath her wings, our mother, Mertha J. Loving Parker, was beckoned home for eternal rest. Mama was born in Bardwell, Kentucky, on January 13, 1931. At the time of her demise she was 78 years, 09 months, and 01 days of age. She was also preceded in death by her husband Fred Parker, her eight sisters, four brothers, and one grandson.
Mama accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age. She was a member of North Hills Church of Christ in Cool Valley, MO, where she enjoyed spending time with the church Women's Group on their outings and also received great pleasure in many of the church members calling her "Grandma". Mama received her formal education in the Cairo, Illinois public schools. She took great pride in her work with the St. Louis Urban League Senior Citizens, where she served as Nutrition specialist and Activity Leader. As Activity Leader she led classes in Knitting, Crocheting and Ceramics. As Nutritionist, meals were coordinated at the center and delivered to homes of the shut-in.
On October 2, 1949, she and Fred "June" Parker united in Holy matrimony and remained as one for 57 years until the Lord called Daddy to eternal rest on July 22, 2006. To this union five children were born. Mama loved her family and extended family and would have the biggest smile when anyone came for a visit.
Our mom loved knitting and crocheting for hours in her recliner. In her early years she would go fishing for the catch of the day with her family and friends. She would please the palates of her husband, children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends with her famous cabbage, pig feet, dumplings, turnips greens, and hot water corn bread, dressing, peach cobbler, and pound cake, just to name a few of her favorite dishes she prepared for all to enjoy. Mama received great pleasure cooking and pleasure cooking and preparing for "Kentucky Family" visiting on vacations and holidays.
Those who will treasure, love, ad embrace her legacy are: her two sons, Anthony (Kathy) Parker of Chicago, IL, and Steve Parker of Huston, TX; three daughters, Bernadine Parker, Meredith Parker, and Linda Parker all of St. Louis, MO; 19 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; two nephews, Theodore (Carolyn) Martin, Kevil, KY, Carroll martin of Toledo, OH; four nieces, Katie loving, Bardwell, KY, Mary Lynn Faint, Clinton, KY, Christine (Herman) Stokes, Toledo, OH, and Imogene Hall of Milwaukee, WI; sister-in-law, Joyce Evans St. Louis, MO; several great nieces and nephews; and a wide circle of friends.
